Solid joys and lasting pleasures
None but Zion’s children know
Corn in their barns and money in the bank;
Assurance and ease, replenished every day;
The debt of nature honoured, with time to pay;
For this, for all, they have the Lord to thank.
Love is for life; they see their offspring glow
Like them, with guaranteed health, and leave them rich.
Such are the solid joys, the pleasures which
Zion’s, and only Zion’s, children know.
Being Zion’s children, can they understand
Moments that fall like music from a cloud:
Late sunlight trembling on bare winter trees,
Love captured in one pressure of a hand,
Or lightning caught from wild eyes in a crowd,
My exquisite, transient ephemerides?
