The Moon Is An Odd Word

1

all day before the silent screen
I sit and dream
o my friend
I was once too young to understand
that oblivion does not depend
on a particular scene

you run before me
in space
hunger of the moon
ache
for feet to experience
dust of an alien place

2

manoeuvres which are unmistakable
dreams which are unrepeatable
world of salt and fire

ocean of salt
gestures of fire
experience
grown in space
materialises
in a world
whose every picture has a meaning

the sun
setting in a wave of hills
creates
a universe of lakes

3

the hills in Italy are
figured with leaves
like embroidery
all summer long

tile floors     the interior
is a forest     the room
lies out of doors

at noon the garden is white
the lake
invisible
sheets thrown out of windows late
bake
walking is difficult
tread warily
whenever life threatens to break
out of indifference
contemplating this abandon of the universe
sprawled out under the sun
I regret
the grace of a lady whose round and serene face
shows only how many things
the painter left undone
he kept her at a distance
did not give
enough to understand
how terrible she was
being young

4

come back
the moon is full
tonight astronauts are dancing
among its silent crags
the white tree in my garden
raises its arms

the ideology seems immaculate
he is the light
the revolution will be silent
the time is right

seeing is believing
believing is sight
put out the candle
overnight

tanks stuck in brambles
guns into ploughshares

but what of those
in a world of disasters
who run?

still
I look at my sisters and despise
what I see in their eyes

5

habit
makes a habitation
you wipe it off the slate
you tip time off your plate
you bring down all the rooms I make

where do you get your power
to make
trees change shape?

it is a game
the hands that make
all these alterations
are not fully grown

6

gravity
doesn’t mean much to a bird
outside my window one sits
where no man would ever climb
and the tree that was blossoming
has been cut down

spring is almost over
but on the moon
immune
the astronauts
celebrate with dancing
