Debt

Anyway you push
she’s not happy.
Difficulties beset her.
She steps in shit.

Her existence
is a bad smell
a sad ache
a wish withheld
a promise never kept.

Her husband had a heart attack
that wrecked her life.
But she notes with satisfaction,
‘He never bothered me again.’

He curled up.
She dried up.
Everything inexplicably changed.

Suspicion roosted on the shelving.
Confusion bloomed like mould
slowly in the corner.
Time ticked warningly
then the gods told her
she’d notched up a huge debt
and they’d arranged to call it in.
