Distinctions of Level

For James Hillman

Beneath tangible ground,
invisible fundaments;
no squat sink holes or aquifers,
no strata for the brain,
agile mind or economic soul.
Fingers won’t trace this hole.

The deepest probe
will not disturb
the elocution of scientists;
celebrationists keep
joyously glancing round.

We toy with words, our immanent gift,
while the earth beneath
our feet is a black sheet covering
a timeless corpse

and no perspective
will lift our eyes
to pinpoint this infinity.
