Bodies like tiger slugs
with feathers;
thatched huts on the move
in a slight breeze.
Eyes insane and judicious.
Legs that emerge from the body
right at the back
defying all forces
except those of a parallelogram
in motion.
Their neat beaks
like black rubber door stops,
emus move like springs on hinges,
tentative but deliberate;
prehistoric toes delicately
encroach on powdery ground.
