i want to write a painting about
sunflowers, their hoary heads
bent in prayer, a trembling square
of drying yellows pushing to
the limits of a field edged on all
sides by pasture where the glowing
browns of cattle moan and mow
the fattened shoots while from the
humming hives bees come to suck
the dying bloom and the sun
flowers crowd and seed

  1. Richard Tipping operates along the blurry boundaries between the verbal and the visual, creating amusing, sometimes illuminating works of concrete poetry. Mr. Tipping’s wordplay sneakily interrupts our everyday habits of perception and cognition to mentally tonic effect.
